ID Your Pet Day

July 1, 2020

Did you know that today, July 1st, is ID Your Pet Day? Making sure that your pet has proper identification won’t take you very long, but it could have a huge effect on your furry friend’s life. In this article from All About Animals Veterinary Services, your Carrollton, GA pet hospital, serving the Villa Rica area, a local vet discusses pet identification.

Microchipping

Has your pet been microchipped? If not, we recommend getting this done right away. It only takes a few minutes to get your pet chipped. However, it could have a huge effect! Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice. They don’t transmit information. In fact, each chip only contains an identification number, which can be picked up by special scanners. That number is linked to your records in the chipmaker’s database. Of course, you’ll need to make sure that your contact information is correct, and keep it up to date. If you haven’t checked in a while, try using the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool here . This site contains information for most of the major chip manufacturers.

Microchips are great, but your dog will still need proper tags. Not only are these required by law in many places, they’re also the simplest and easiest way for someone to connect you and your pet. If Fido gets out, and wanders into a yard a few miles away, you definitely want that person to be able to contact you. Have some fun with your canine pal’s tags, and personalize them a bit. Use pretty pink ones for a girl dog. Or, if you like sports, get your pup ones. (Tip: there are some great Falcons ones online.)

Preparation

It’s always best to be prepared for the worst. Take some clear photos of your pet from a few different angles. That way, if your furry pal slips away, you’ll be able to make flyers right away. Training is also important. If you have a yard, make sure the gate closes securely. Many beloved pets have slipped out through gates that were left open. Last but not least, always keep your dog on a leash when you take him off your property.
