5 Tips on How to Keep an Outside Cat Healthy

July 15, 2021

Do you let Fluffy go outside? Maybe you adopted, or semi-adopted, a local feline friend? While all veterinarians recommend that you keep your cat inside, we do know that some of our kitties like to investigate the great outdoors. Others may never get used to indoor life. Below, a veterinarian provides five tips on how to keep an outdoor cat happy, healthy, and purring.

Food

Like all animals, your cat requires good food in order to thrive. Since kibble lasts longer than wet food, it’s probably your best bet. But, don’t leave out too much food, as this may attract pests, such as mice and rats. Try to feed Fluffy inside, if possible.

Water

Another basic necessity for all animals is clean water. Your feline buddy should always have clean water available. You’ll want to wash her water bowl regularly, as germs and dust will collect in it if you don’t.

Shelter

Fluffy may have a fur coat, but it doesn’t offer total protection from the environment. Bring her inside when it’s cold or hot outside. Even still, it’s a good idea to make an emergency shelter, just in case your kitty gets left outside. One simple DIY project for this is to put two plastic storage totes together, one fitting inside the other, leaving a little space. Put newspapers or old towels in the space, providing insulation. Add a blanket on the inside for comfort. Then, cut holes in the side, to make a kitty door,

Veterinary Care

It’s recommended that all cats be microchipped, fixed, and kept up-to-date on vaccines and parasite control. This preventative care is especially important for felines that live or are allowed to go outside. Outdoor pets are more susceptible to germs and parasites than indoor ones, so they should go into the vet a little more often. Talk to your local animal clinic for an appointment schedule.

Lifestyle Change

The best thing you can do for an outside cat is to keep her indoors. Your furry pal will be both healthier and safer that way. This lifestyle change may take patience and time, but keep trying. Offering treats, toys, catnip, and kitty furniture will help make her want to stay inside. If all you can do is limit Fluffy’s time outside, let her out only during the day, and when there’s nice weather.
