Tips for Getting Your Dog a Squeaky Toy

October 15, 2020

Oct. 28th is Plush Animal Lovers’ Day! Does your dog love squeaky toys? Fido is pretty adorable when he’s chasing after his favorite plaything! However, there are some things to keep in mind when it comes to giving your dog fun playthings. Here, your vet gives some tips on choosing your pooch’s toys.

D iscarding Old Toys

Squeaky toys don’t tend to be the most long-lasting dog toys. And some pooches make very short work of them! Pay attention to the condition of your canine companion’s toys, and do your best to repair or trash old ones. (Pro tip: distract your playful pup by giving him a new toy while you do this.)

Rotate

Variety is the spice of life, as they say. Be sure to rotate your furry pal’s toys in and out on a regular basis. We recommend doing this when Fido is napping or spending time outdoors.

Cleaning

Let’s face it: squeaky toys can get crusty and gross pretty quickly. Wash your furry pal’s toys regularly. Toys in good condition can usually be machine-washed, but you’ll want to check the label instructions to be absolutely sure.

Prey Drive

Some dogs are just hardwired to go after small critters, and that can raise concerns among some pet owners about their dog’s aggressive play drive. After all, your dog might think that squeak sounds like something his ancestors would have hunted in the wild. Talk to your vet about suitable play strategies and toy types if you think your dog has a strong prey drive.

Material

A toy’s material is also something to think about. Always read the labels, and try to opt for products that use non-toxic materials. Your pup will thank you!

Squeakers

Many dogs eat the squeakers right out of squeaky toys. And this can prove to be very dangerous! It’s easy for a plastic squeaker to cause an intestinal blockage, which is a serious problem. If your canine pal is fond of eating squeakers, you’ll be better off getting him a different kind of toy. If you aren’t sure how your pooch will react, supervise play sessions with a watchful eye.

Benefits

Squeaky toys can be useful—if you’re trying to get your dog’s attention for a fun photograph, for example. This kind of toy can also be great for older dogs, because they’re soft on the mouth.
