Helping Cats And Dogs Get Along

Are your cat and dog fighting like, well, cats and dogs? Fluffy and Fido have had a very long and fairly complicated relationship. While sometimes these guys become very close, at other times they barely tolerate one another. In this article from All About Animals Veterinary Services, serving the Villa Rica area, a local vet offers tips on helping your pets get along.

Start Young

If you want to have both dogs and cats, your best bet is to get them at the same time and let them grow up together. Otherwise, the safety of both animals should be a top priority when choosing a new pet. If you already have a cat, make sure that any dog you are considering adopting has been around kitties. Keep in mind that some dogs naturally have a strong prey drive, and just aren’t a good match for households with cats.

Offer Safe Spaces

Dogs are usually bigger than cats, which understandably makes kitties a bit nervous. Make sure Fluffy has a safe spot to retreat to in every room. This should be somewhere Fido can’t reach her, like a spot under the bed or behind a couch. Vertical space, such as cat towers, work well for this.

Provide Separate Resources

Fido and Fluffy can both get a bit territorial, especially over food, toys, and bedding. Provide each pet with their own separate area. For larger dogs, use a baby gate to keep Fido out of Fluffy’s spot.

Help Fido burn off any excess energy he has by playing with him and taking him for lots of walks. Tired dogs are good dogs! Of course, sometimes Fluffy is the bully here. Fun play sessions may tire your feisty feline out.

Make sure Fido obeys simple commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come. If need be, work with a professional dog trainer.

Separate Zones

In some cases, keeping your pets separated may work. How easy or difficult this is will depend on how your home is set up. For instance, if you have two stories, you may be able to keep Fluffy upstairs and Fido downstairs.

Don’t Play Favorites

Pay both of your furry friends equal attention. Fido and Fluffy can get very jealous of one another!
