7 Reasons to Appreciate Guinea Pigs

July 16th is Guinea Pig Appreciation Day! These little furballs may not be as popular as dogs and cats, but they definitely have lots of great qualities. In this article from All About Animals Veterinary Services, serving the Villa Rica area, a local vet lists some great reasons to appreciate Guinea pigs.

They Love To Cuddle

Many pocket pets are quite timid, and are easily frightened. Guinea pigs, however, tend to be a bit more affectionate than most other small animals. Many of them even like sleeping on their owners’ laps!

They Can Do Tricks!

While you probably will never be able to teach your cavy to bring you your slippers, you may be able to show your tiny pet some simple tricks. Guinea pigs can be taught to do things like turning in circles, jumping through hoops, and going into their cages on command. We probably don’t have to tell you how cute these things are to watch!

They Wheek!

We all know that cats meow and dogs bark, but do you know what kind of noises Guinea pigs make? These tiny furballs actually make a variety of noises, from chirps to squeaks. However, their signature sound is called a Wheek, which is just as adorable as the name suggests.

They’re Charismatic

There usually isn’t a very noticeable difference between most smaller pets, at least when it comes to personality. Guinea pigs, however, are all quite unique. Some are shy, some are friendly, and some love to cuddle.

They’re Gentle

Guinea pigs are very popular as children’s pets, and with good reason. They’re usually quite docile, as long as they are handled gently and regularly, and rarely bite.

They’re Quiet

Although cavies aren’t totally silent, they really don’t make a lot of noise. You won’t have to worry about your pet waking up the neighbors!

They’re Hilarious

All of us here at All About Animals have truly and completely devoted ourselves to keeping pets healthy, and generally promoting good animal welfare. We have, however, never promised not to occasionally laugh at our furry patients. These cute little furballs really are fun to watch, and they just have a way of making us all chuckle!
