Heart Disease
Heart disease is one of the main dangers that obese cats face. If Fluffy is obese or overweight, her heart will have to work harder to move blood throughout her body.
Skin Problems
Kitties that are overweight have a harder time reaching their entire bodies to groom themselves. They can also develop painful skin problems.
Diabetes
Obesity is often a factor in feline diabetes. Fluffy is more likely to develop this dangerous disease if she is obese or overweight.
Liver Trouble
Obese kitties have a higher risk of developing liver trouble. Fluffy can get very sick if her liver isn’t functioning correctly!
Increased Risk of Complications
Cats are also more likely to develop complications after surgery or from anesthesia if they are overweight or obese.
Bone/Joint Issues
Obesity can contribute to painful bone/joint problems, such as arthritis. If Fluffy is obese, her bones and joints will be under additional strain. Whenever your furball jumps down from her favorite napping spot, for instance, the impact on her skeleton will be much stronger if she is overweight.
Other Risks
These are just a few of the health risks faced by chubby kitties. If Fluffy is obese, she is also more likely to develop certain types of cancer, and will have a lower heat tolerance. Obesity can also contribute to digestive issues, and can even shorten your feline friend’s lifespan!
Keeping Fluffy Fit
As you’ve likely noticed, cats spend a lot of time sleeping, which can make it easy for them to pack on extra weight. Keep Fluffy active by offering her lots of fun toys and playing with her daily. As for her diet, follow your vet’s recommendations, including portion sizes, and don’t overindulge your furball with fatty treats.
